Staying in touch with each other, nurturing our faith, supporting-caring for our families, including those left behind, serving God’s world and our local community in loving action, in study, worship, offering our prayers and presence- that’s who we are as the women of Yuma 1st!

Fellowship

Communicating via phone calls, text, Zoom, Conference Calling, and small group gatherings are some of the ways we tell our stories, learn, support each other, grow and allow God to strengthen us!

“Hands-on” projects!

United Methodist Women at First Church Yuma are collecting feminine hygiene products, which are then donated to the Yuma Community Food Bank “Period Project”. There is a collection box in the narthex, so bring your donations when you come to church on Sunday. This is an ongoing project.

Feminine hygiene products cannot be purchased with SNAP ( food stamps) benefits, and are actually taxed in Arizona as a luxury item! Many women have found themselves unable to afford sanitary products that are vital to health and hygiene. The Food Bank tells us that the teens prefer pads to tampons.

United Methodist Women

Soul Sisters - meets twice a month on Wednesdays at 1 pm by phone conference. For each meeting, we have an expert presenter via the “magic” of podcasts. We each listen to the podcast at a convenient time, and then gather to discuss the ideas presented.

Reading Circle - using the United Methodist Women Reading Program book lists, we each choose a book to read that interests us. Then we meet once a month, for now by zoom, to discuss what we learned from our books. Book categories are Education for Mission, Nurturing for Community, Spiritual Growth, Social Action, and Leadership Development.

A list of books is available if you’d like to join us! We have many of the books in the church library, and lots more are available through the public library. This group is now forming, so we hope you’ll join us.

Sewing Circle - If you love to sew, knit, crochet, or otherwise create with your hands, this is the group for you! This group is now forming, and we’d love to have you join us. Some plans include masks to be used for homeless ministries and the asylum seekers travel bags ( see the Outreach/ Missions section of the website for more information!) , knitted or quilted baby blankets/ small blankets for the asylum travel bags, knitted hats for homeless ministries, layette items for donations to the hospital mother-baby unit, and we are also registered as a Team in Training for Days for Girls. Check out that creative project at daysforgirls.org to learn more. Days for Girls provides beautifully sustainable, re-usable cloth menstrual products around the world, and in the U.S.

United Methodist Women at the District, Conference and National levels offer multiple opportunities to grow in your faith, and to put your faith and love into action! Check it out at unitedmethodistwomen.org

Layette Project:

Throughout the summer we’ll be collecting newborn to size 3 months onesies, gowns, footie pajamas, t-shirts and “outfits”, baby washcloths, receiving blankets, baby sweater, baby knitted hat/cap, socks and hand mitties. Assembled layettes will be donated to the maternity department at Yuma Regional Medical Center for newborns taken into foster care and newborns of asylum seeking mothers. Donations will also be given to the Crisis Pregnancy Center.

There is a collection box in the narthex, so bring your new or very gently used items with you on Sundays!
